Andrew, I couldn’t agree with you more that this debate is old and tiresome. It nothing more than a bunch of fanboys and ol’ guard members who don’t appreciate the competition or the support of a complementary technology working along side their own favorite tech.
But I think where we disagree was with your comment here:
“Conversely, Flex is not easy to learn for a ColdFusion developer (or anyone else for that matter). Yet, once you learn it, it is even more difficult to master. I don’t think there are a large number of people who will argue with that fact.”
I know nothing of ColdFusion so I won’t speak to those users. But for “anyone else”, I have heard nothing about how easy it was to get on board with using Flex. As with any discipline, mastering it is like stretching a rubber band, easy at first but harder and harder at the later stages. This is not just a Flex thing, this is true with every technology when we begin to push the envelope.
I also don’t understand your issue with learning Flex and underlying actionscript when the js in Ajax is also based on ECMAScript. They are sister languages basically.
But in general, I do agree with you. Folks, stop the bickering. And with any technology developer, you gotta learn – Evolve or Die.
Finally!! I’m glad you came out and said it Andrew. This whole debate needs to stop and people need to learn to use the right tool for the task at hand.
